OSU announces Horning awards
The Advisory Committee for the Honring Support Program forHumanistic Scholarship at Oregon State University recentlyannounced its fall 2011 awards.
Awards were made in two categories:
• Research: Jim Blumenthal, philosophy; Marisa Chappell,history; Gary Ferngren, history; Karen Holmberg, English; MarkPorrovecchio, speech cCommunication; Kara Ritzheimer, history;Susan Rodgers, English; Stuart Sarbacker, philosophy; and StaceySmith, history; and
• Visiting speakers and conferences: Courtney Campbell,philosophy; Elizabeth Helman, theater arts; Hung-yok Ip, history;Jonathan Kaplan, philosophy; and Susan Meyers, English.
These awards met the Horning Endowment’s criteria to improve andextend the teaching of humanities to the sciences and otherdisciplines at OSU, and to extend humanistic knowledge in ways thatdemonstrate the importance of the liberal arts to the sciences.
The Horning Advisory Committee consists of Flo Leibowitz of thePhilosophy Department, David Luft of the History Department, andDavid Robinson of the English Department.
Corvallis man graduates from School ofMines
Nicholas Amedo of Corvallis graduated cum laude from ColoradoSchool of Mines on Dec. 16.
Amedo earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanicalengineering. Cum laude indicates Amedo’s grade-point average fellin the range between 3.5 to 3.7. Amedo also was a member of theMines’ men’s soccer team, which went to NCAA post-season play inhis junior and senior years. He is starting his engineering careerthis month at TAKRAF Denver.
Corvallis woman makes EWU dean’s list
Laura Rentz of Corvallis has been named to the fall term dean’slist at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
An undergraduate student who earns 12 quality hours and receivesa grade-point average of 3.5 or better is placed on the dean’s listfor the quarter.
Wells named to Wyoming honor roll
Caroline V. Wells of Corvallis has been listed on the Universityof Wyoming fall semester president’s honor roll.
The honor roll consists of regularly enrolled undergraduates whoearned a 4.0 grade-point average for the semester. To be eligible,students must have been enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hourstaken for letter grades.
Corvallis man receives degree from Clemson
Chiradeep Sen, a resident of Corvallis, graduated Dec. 22 fromClemson University with a doctorate degree in mechanicalengineering.
Corvallis resident listed at New Haven
Jassim Mohammed SQ Al-Kuwari, a freshman from Corvallis, wasnamed to the fall semester dean’s list at the University of NewHaven.
Full-time undergraduate students must have a 3.5 or bettercumulative grade-point average for the semester to be eligible forthe dean’s list.
OSU’s Abbott receives Microsoft award
Oregon State University oceanographic leader Mark Abbott hasbeen named the 2011 recipient of the Jim Gray eScience Award,presented by Microsoft Research.
Abbott, who is dean of OSU’s College of Earth, Ocean andAtmospheric Sciences, is the fourth recipient of the award sinceits 2008 inception. It is presented to a nationally recognizedresearcher who has made outstanding contributions to data-intensivecomputing.
He received the award Dec. 5 in Stockholm, Sweden, at a jointmeeting of the 2011 Microsoft Research eScience workshop and theannual Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineersconference.
Under Abbott’s leadership, the College of Earth, Ocean andAtmospheric Sciences has developed an international reputation forits research – especially in collection, synthesis and distributionof data.
Abbott’s research has pioneered the use of satellitemeasurements of ocean productivity, the deployment of biologicalsensors in the Southern Ocean between New Zealand and Antarctica,and the use of computer technology on ocean gliders andvehicles.
